The View From Here

Jeff Brull, Executive Director HaysMed Foundation

I’ve always been a fan of theater and film. The stories and the lessons they teach are often very relatable, even if the plot or the setting is not. Rocky (1976) taught us that it’s not how hard you can hit, but how many times you get back up after getting knocked down. Dead Poets Society (1989) taught us to seize the day. Forrest Gump (1994) taught us that life is like a box of chocolates, and Jaws (1975) taught us that sometimes you need a bigger boat. Those lessons are the things that we identify with, but the key to getting us to pay attention is the story.

Stick around after a movie is over, and when the credits roll you’ll see how many people helped tell that story. Yes, there’s the cast, the producer, director, and all the people you might see on the Oscar stage. But what’s a gaffer, best boy, or dolly grip? Why does the work of the foley artist or the clapper loader matter? Believe me — you would notice if those people weren’t there!

In the film industry, a python wrangler is a utility sound tech who performs various sound department tasks, usually pulling cables.

It’s not so different from the teams of Associates across dozens of departments here at HaysMed. As a patient, loved one, or visitor to HaysMed you will likely never see or interact with the countless individuals responsible for your care and the teams of people that support them. HaysMed is open 24/7/365 with staff responsible for direct patient care, technology, maintaining accurate records, managing finances, keeping our facilities clean and safe, and a hundred other things you will never notice until they’re not there. Although we don’t have focus pullers or python wranglers like those fancy Hollywood studios, we’ve got teams of people that are here around the clock to be part of telling our story of providing the best care available.

We always encourage sharing your story of appreciation with our Associates through our Healthcare Champion nominations available at haysmedfoundation.org/champion/ where you may nominate a person or department with a few kind words and make a contribution, if you choose, in honor of the great care you or a loved one received.
