Description

This live clinical training is a provider-directed clinical skills program designed to promote the professional performance of the RN or APRN in the role as an adult/adolescent sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) or sexual assault forensic examiner (SAFE). The purpose is to prepare didactically trained SANE/SAFE nurses in the clinical aspects of the adult/adolescent sexual assault medical-forensic examination, regardless of the medical practice setting.

Target Audience 

RN's or APRN’s who have completed a 40-hour or 64-hour SANE/SART Adult/Adolescent Didactic Course.

Registration
The normal registration fee of $400.00 for this course is being waived for professionals who work with rural or underserved Kansas victims/patients of sexual assault. This clinical training is being sponsored by the Pittsburg State University ANE-SANE Grant through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). HRSA requires that we collect certain demographic data as well as National Provider Identifiers (NPIs) from all nurses who attend this clinical.  In order to collect this data, the grant coordinator at PSU will email a week or two before the training with a link to a brief questionnaire and instructions on how to obtain your free NPI number. Please note that this information will not be shared with anyone other than HRSA. Please email PSUSANEGrant@pittstate.edu for further information.

The Irene Ransom Bradley School of Nursing at Pittsburg State University was originally awarded an Advanced Nursing Education-Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (ANE-SANE) Grant through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) in 2018, 2021 and was then awarded a three-year extension in 2024. The grant funds are used to recruit, train, and retain registered nurses (RNs) and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) in rural areas of Kansas for SANE training, resources, and certification. The extension will provide for an increased numbers of sexual assault programs, improved access to forensic nurses, and multi-disciplinary education for sexual assault response teams (SARTs) across the state of Kansas.

The HaysMed Foundation, in an effort to address the increasing challenges faced by the medical community, was established in 1995. The Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization as described more specifically in Internal Revenue Service Code 509(a)(3) as a supporting organization of Hays Medical Center. The HaysMed Foundation is dedicated to support, assist, and promote the interest and welfare of Hays Medical Center, its programs and activities. The Foundation is governed by a board of community volunteers. This offering has been approved for 17.75 nursing continuing education contact hours. This nursing continuing professional development activity was approved by the International Association of Forensic Nurses, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Objectives

Following this program, the participants can be expected to:

  1. Verbalize and demonstrate clinical competency in performing a medical forensic examination of an adult/adolescent patient.
  2. Verbalize and demonstrate clinical competency in performing a detailed female and male ano-genital examination, including speculum and anoscope insertion.
  3. Verbalize and demonstrate the ability to utilize assistive visualization techniques, including but not limited to: toluidine blue dye, foley catheter technique, alternative light source, digital forensic photography, etc.
  4. Verbalize and demonstrate competency and application of critical thinking skills through history taking and assessment, in a variety of sexual assault examination scenarios including but not limited to: drug facilitated assault, reported vs. non-reported exams, etc.

Program Outcomes

Upon completion of this clinical training, nurses will have a more comprehensive understanding of the medical-legal examination and factors affecting the care of the sexual assault patient. Lecture and return demonstration of essential skills utilizing live patient models (GTAs), including history taking, assessment, forensic photography, evidence collection, patient education, care planning and discharge, will be the core focus. This clinical training will enhance the nurse's ability to provide comprehensive forensic medical care to persons affected by sexual assault in a variety of complex patient scenarios.
