Hybrid Operating Room: The Future of Cardiovascular Care for Our Region

Representatives from HaysMed’s Cardiovascular Team and Administration were joined by
dozens of other Associates, Donors, and Community Members for a Chamber ribbon
cutting to celebrate the new Hybrid OR which advances healthcare in our region.

The completion of the Hybrid Operating Room (OR) is a momentous occasion that sets a new standard in cardiovascular care for all the communities served by HaysMed’s DeBakey Heart Institute. The Hybrid OR blends the advanced imaging of a cardiac catheterization lab and a traditional cardiac OR to address conditions that were previously only treatable with open-heart surgery.

HaysMed is the only hospital in the state of Kansas to have some of the cutting-edge technology including a state of the art OR table that moves in all directions and a Computed Tomography (CT) scanner that takes images in one single slice for instantaneous use during the procedure.

“We are incredibly proud to be the first in the state of Kansas to establish a Hybrid OR with such advanced technology and C-arm imaging capability. This groundbreaking facility represents a major milestone in our commitment to providing the highest quality of cardiac care. It allows us to offer innovative procedures with greater precision and efficiency, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes and setting a new standard for healthcare in our region,” shared Eddie Herrman, President and CEO of HaysMed.

Dr. Niranjan Seshadri, one of HaysMed’s interventional cardiologists, described HaysMed’s new Hybrid OR as a dream come true for all the cardiovascular specialists at the DeBakey Heart Institute. He explained, “This Hybrid OR represents a monumental leap in our ability to provide comprehensive cardiac care. Over the last 10-15 years, the field of cardiovascular care is converging to a more collaborative approach. What they call a heart team approach. Everybody is looking at a slightly different component as we are taking care of the patient, but we bring it all together in this Hybrid OR Suite.”

Over 4,400 square feet, nearly the size of a basketball court, were renovated inside the DeBakey Heart Institute at HaysMed to create this Hybrid OR space. This achievement is made possible by generous financial support from local and regional donors dedicated to advancing local healthcare.

Jeff Brull, HaysMed Foundation Executive Director, recognized the pivotal role of major contributors: “These investments from the Bickle Family Foundation, Dennis and Patricia Norris Family, J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation, Schmidt Foundation, Hadley Foundation, Verlin and Elaine Pfannenstiel, High Plains Farm Credit, and dozens of other contributors represent approximately $4.2 million, about half of the total project cost. We’re excited about the expanded services this project represents to the entire region. It benefits our neighbors and friends, and it was built by our neighbors and friends right here in rural Kansas.”

With this groundbreaking facility, HaysMed is setting a new standard in surgical and cardiovascular care—bringing the future of medicine to our community and western Kansas today.
